Review

A good mixture of an amazing story and an eye opener to mental health.

Are We All Lemmings and Snowflakes? follows Olive, a mentally troubled young girl, in  her journey to “cure” herself and other kids of their illness.

A poignant story, this book really touches the heart of its reader. It gives subtle hints of the problem people with mental health are facing and it builds up as the story progresses. It is beautifully written and it really evokes a certain kind of sympathy and understanding between the reader and the underlying plot of the story.

The characters are both likeable and hate worthy, but I guess hating someone for an attitude that they cannot fully control is like hating your mother for giving birth to you. Olive is vain. Olive is annoying. Olive is loveable. She is everything there is to look for in a character. She is real, and that is what makes her so special. She is relatable, and that is what makes her a the perfect character.

Additionally, every character in this book is unique and has their own distinctness. They are all troubled in a way, and those trouble really gave them depth. Their characterization was also well done. I applaud Holly Bourne for being a great creator of characters.

On another note, let’s talk about the writing style. I think that the style of writing is very simple and easy to connect with. I adore how she created the story with an illuminating and complex underlying plot interwoven in a simple teenage story.

Overall, I love this book and it is definitely a must read! The information dump this book provides, the ideas, the reflection that can help people who are mentally troubled is just amazing. This is definitely a good book to read for a book club. Highly recommended.
