Endangered, Ep.01: Tooth & Nails by Borg Sinaban

This review may contain spoilers.

Borg Sinabang’s Endangered opens with Asha sneaking out in the middle of the night. Missing her mother, she heads out with her painting supplies to visit a place they frequently went to when her mother was still alive.

When she arrives, she notices that parts of the property’s fence are broken. While making her way through the area, she hears a rustling sound. Frightened by what it could be, she runs away and ends up falling off a cliff.

She wakes up at home in her bed with her father by her side. Apparently, she was found and carried home by Arturo, the butler of Doña Selvala, the owner of the property Asha had wandered to.

This was when the story really began for me. The opening sequence of the episode was engaging, albeit awfully sad. Asha simply misses her mother, and in trying to do something that reminded her of the time they spent together, she gets herself into trouble.

It was a good introduction to who Asha is. She’s courageous, accepting the consequences of what she did head-on without dragging her father into the situation.

The supporting characters were all interesting as well. I’m especially curious to know more about Arturo: how he came to work for the Doña and what his motivations are. Doña Selvala was intriguing too. Her strong personality at the beginning made her seem rather intimidating and unpleasant, but as the story progressed, she started to come across as a surprisingly nice old lady. However, the revelation toward the end of the episode made me question the true nature of the Doña altogether.

If this episode alone held me hostage, I can only imagine what the completed volume will do to me. I most definitely need a copy once it’s released! The story was exciting, the pacing was perfect, and the characters were intriguing. There wasn’t anything that the dampened the fun of reading it all.

Of course, I also have to give a special mention to Cotton who, despite the soft and adorable name, seems to have quite the strong and angry personality. I’m looking forward to seeing more of this story and its characters!
