Frieren: Beyond Journey’s, Vol. 1 End Review

Elf mage Frieren and her courageous fellow adventurers have defeated the Demon King and brought peace to the land. But Frieren will long outlive the rest of her former party. How will she come to understand what life means to the people around her?

Decades after their victory, the funeral of one her friends confronts Frieren with her own near immortality. Frieren sets out to fulfill the last wishes of her comrades and finds herself beginning a new adventure…

Frieren took me by surprise and easily became one of my favourite manga/anime this year.

The story follows an elf who is a part of a party that was made to slay the demon king. What’s special about the story, though, is that it focuses on the “after” rather than the quest of vanquishing the demon king itself.

I love how relaxing this book feels. Frieren is so laid back and has little to no relationship with the concept of time, given her lifespan as an elf.

As a mage, she is quite peculiar. She’s more interested in pretty much useless or totally mundane spells which, to me, makes her even more charming.

The progression of the story is beautiful – showing how Frieden’s personality and her way of connecting with people slowly changes as she goes on her own journey.

To sum it up, this volume introduces us to the party, but more importantly, to our main protagonist – Frieren; as she goes on a journey not only to find new and fascinating spells but also to learn more about herself.
