Pokémon Adventures:Red and Blue, Vol.04 by Hidenori Kusaka

Red has won the League Tournament, and now he’s receiving a ton of challenges. However, an unexpected challenger decides to fight him—Bruno.

This series is certainly full of surprises. Team Rocket is gruesome, brutal, and downright morbid. And now, even the Elite Four are, too.

Lorelei, the Ice-type trainer of the Elite Four, decides to send Bruno to fight Red. Of course, Bruno’s fighting abilities are leagues beyond Red’s. Red is defeated, but Pikachu manages to escape and call Professor Oak for help.

Yellow is a new character introduced in this volume. Yellow has the ability to heal injured Pokémon and communicate with them through the mind. And by that, I mean sensing their emotions and interpreting them. Likewise, Yellow can communicate emotions back to them.

There are plenty of battles in this volume. I was even surprised to see a Magneton lose one of its screws. Considering that’s technically part of its body… does that count as gore?

Overall, the narrative definitely keeps you on your toes. The brutality is far removed from the Pokémon I grew up with, so there’s always something exciting and unexpected to discover in each volume.

I can’t wait to read the next one.
