A heartfelt story of a kid being taught by his father to ride a bicycle. Short yet poignant, it beautifully portrays the love and encouragement of a father for his son, who is afraid of falling.
This is the first graphic novel I’ve read that tells two timelines simultaneously, and I find that incredibly unique. With every turn of the page, I felt myself getting teary-eyed. Early on, the reader is given the choice of reading the two stories side by side or following one timeline at a time.
One timeline follows a father teaching his son how to ride a bicycle, while the other looks back at the father’s own childhood as he remembers learning from his mother. It’s a quiet reminder that kindness, patience, and encouragement are gifts passed from one generation to the next.
The watercolor artwork was mesmerizing. I especially loved how the distinct color palettes separated the two timelines. Cliché as it may be, the use of sepia tones for the past worked beautifully. It evoked both nostalgia and warmth, making the memories all the more poignant.
