There was a certain randomness to my decision to finally start this book. It wasn’t because of the anime because if it were, I would’ve picked this up as soon as my fiancé and I got back from Cape Town. No, it was more because I got this McDonald’s UNO card set, and I wanted to justify the purchase by knowing more about the story.

Spy × Family follows the unexpected story of a family brought together for espionage. Loid Forger (not his real name) is a spy who needs to get close to Desmond in order to complete his mission. However, if he wants that to happen, he first needs to have a child.
Anya is a telepath whom Loid adopts from a shady orphanage. He has no clue about her ability, so she uses it to trick him into adopting her.
As they work toward getting Anya into an elite school, they discover that having a mother in the picture may be necessary for them to pass the school’s assessment.
Yor Briar is a civil servant, but in the shadows, she is the Thorn Princess—an assassin. After bumping into her at a tailor shop, Anya immediately realizes that Yor could become her pretend mom.
The combination of these people in one family isn’t even the weirdest part. The weirdness comes from everyone trying so hard to keep their secrets from one another.
It’s such a hilarious story, especially as Anya reads everyone’s minds while trying not to slip up and reveal what she knows. The emotions conveyed throughout the story are funny but still have that touch of poignancy that keeps everything from feeling purely comedic.
I can’t wait to learn more about these characters, their backgrounds, and how this very strange family develops as the series continues.
