Fluent in 3 Months Review

Benny Lewis, who speaks over ten languages—all self-taught—runs the largest language-learning blog in the world, Fluent In 3 Months. Lewis is a full-time "language hacker," someone who devotes all of his time to finding better, faster, and more efficient ways to learn languages. Fluent in 3 Months: How Anyone at Any Age Can Learn to Speak Any Language from Anywhere in the World is a new blueprint for fast language learning. Lewis argues that you don't need a great memory or "the language gene" to learn a language quickly, and debunks a number of long-held beliefs, such as adults not being as good of language learners as children.

Review

It is no secret that I have been trying to learn French for, give or take, 3 months. The people who are aware of my starting date/month would say that it was longer; however, I am not a man of consistency. Knowing that, I did stop here and there for a month or two or maybe three.

Fluent in 3 Months definitely gave me another push in wanting to learn a language. Setting my initial desire to read literature in their original texts, and injecting a strong interest to communicate with people, make new friends, and deepen bond with those that are already present.

The book was definitely insightful in many aspects and did offer a relevant topic with learning a language. Although, I would say that the title is rather misleading. I believe the education of the book is leaning towards the a more different path — concentrating on a similar motivating factor, but not necessarily discussing what the reader might think of “fluency” to be the strongest point of the book.

In addition, I find it truly fascinating to see tips on trying to learn different languages. It did not only offer a generalize concept to fluency, but an idea, or modern people might say, a “hack” in trying to learn these specific languages. In all honesty, I skipped most of these languages as they will not aide in my studies yet I do not deny my plans on looking back at them.

I believe that the overall appeal of the book is lost within its pages as it did not necessarily indicate an honest path to fluency but instead defined what fluency could be and trekked that path. It is not, by any means, a bad decision. But in truth, an absolutely effective marketing strategy.
