Jujutsu Kaisen, Volume 4 Review

In a world where cursed spirits feed on unsuspecting humans, fragments of the legendary and feared demon Ryomen Sukuna were lost and scattered about. Should any demon consume Sukuna’s body parts, the power they gain could destroy the world as we know it. Fortunately, there exists a mysterious school of Jujutsu Sorcerers who exist to protect the precarious existence of the living from the supernatural!

While investigating a strange set of mysterious deaths, Itadori meets Junpei, a troubled kid who is often bullied at school. However, Junpei is also befriended by the culprit behind the bloody incident—Mahito, a mischievous cursed spirit! Mahito sets in motion a devious plan involving Junpei, hoping to ensnare Itadori as well.

REVIEW

“Even if we assume it’s right for the death of the good to be peaceful and of the wicked to be punishments, most people aren’t good or evil. Death comes for us all. But we all die differently.”

The anime adaptation of this manga series definitely cannot give the darkness of the story any justice.

I adore how Akutami-sensei do not shy away in doing whatever must be done with his characters in order to deliver a powerful message. He makes me wonder, yet again, if it is worth it to be attached to any of the characters — considering I have a lovely stroke of luck of having my primary favourite character dying in almost all of the books (or shows) that I indulge myself into.

Despite this level of gruesome storytelling, Akutami-sensei isn’t without a bubbly personality. I’ve said it in my previous reviews of his works, and I will say it again, he is such a funny person. It makes me think whether or not that is his actual personality in person or not since I believe that it’s hard to consistently output this level of humour without having that inherent to yourself.

This manga is helping me get back to this form of literary work. I absolutely love the characters and that small nuances between them that makes their relationships special throughout the book.
