Lord of Time Review

Time doesn’t heal all wounds. It makes them deeper.

Alfred White’s only concern in life is his career. Until he meets Pacific, a mysterious man who questions Alfred’s obedience to a system designed to harvest people’s time.

Yes. Time. Pacific seems to know the inner truth behind time, and he will share this knowledge—if Alfred will accept his mentorship for one day. But Alfred soon learns that the road to temporal knowledge is paved with death and destruction.

And, as the day continues, Alfred discovers another truth: there is nothing Pacific wouldn’t do for more time.

Review

A e-copy of the book has been provided by the author, Michele Amitrani, in exchange for an honest review.

It is pretty embarrassing to note that I have had a copy of this book since its publication [2019] and I have finished it only now. Although, in my defense, I am a strong mood reader. So I did try to pick this book up many times over the course of those years and never really had the “right mood” to commence with the story.

There is a part relief, part gratefulness for the fact that I waited for a right time to read the book. Earlier, it would have been a mess forcing myself in something that I felt, at the time, was wrong—and it is true for most of what I review, so I apologize for any delays with my readings.

“Names are powerful things few people know how to handle. When you name something, or someone, that thing or that person becomes the name itself. And then it can’t be anything but the meaning it’s bound to.”

Lord of Time is a curious story of about a man, Alfred White, who stumbled upon a stranger [Pacific] who (you guessed it right) has the capacity to manipulate time. Pacific offers Alfred a chance to break through the knowledge and truth behind time. And that is where our story ebbed and flowed.

Michele Amitrani really have knack for great writing and engaging storytelling. He laid out an interesting prologue within the novel that ignites a spark of deep curiosity. It is not particularly hard to deduce the possibilities of the story within the constraint of this prologue and that, I believe, was what made it an effective beginning.

The prologue offered the readers mind a question—both of something that we may or may not already know. What would the outcome of the story be? Is this story similar to this story? Who is the guy? Why can he control time? Each question kindles a theory, and these theories, in turn, blazes into a flame of desire to know the answers.

“Don’t be in such a rush to understand. To figure things out. The path to knowledge is a marathon, not a sprint. Watch, and learn. Words can bring you only so far. Experience is a far better teacher.”

I very much enjoyed how Amitrani played with the pacing and writing of his story. The beginning chapter (without telling any spoiler) perfectly molded the character’s personality—it was a concise yet broad canvas brought to life. Moreover, I love the repetitive nature in the chapters. It enveloped the reader in a sense of loophole, playing well within the concept of the story—time.

An interesting tale to say the least, Lord of Time is far from perfect; however, it took me for a ride towards the mysteries of time—or who controls it. I deeply enjoyed every waking moment (yes I did take a nap) of reading it.

“Every choice people make has a consequence in the book of their life. They can write on that book, but they can’t change what’s written. At best, they can tear off pages.”
