101 Essays That Will Change The Way You Think

Over the past few years, Brianna Wiest has gained renown for her deeply moving, philosophical writing. This new compilation of her published work features pieces on why you should pursue purpose over passion, embrace negative thinking, see the wisdom in daily routine, and become aware of the cognitive biases that are creating the way you see your life. Some of these pieces have never been seen; others have been read by millions of people around the world. Regardless, each will leave you thinking: this idea changed my life.

Review

“Accomplishing goals is not success. How much you expand in the process is.”

Underwhelming to say the least, this book started off good and slowly dragged itself to something less than what I expected it to be.

I am not saying that the book is bad, as you can still find wisdom in it; however, the nature of the writing and the trajectory of each essay borders to such close similarity that it feels like some of them can be squeezed together and will basically end with a singular message all the same.

There are points—or more—that may come across as lazy writing or just overly simplistic that the repetitiveness of ideas within two different essays may make you doubletake and think if they accidentally duplicated a writing.

If you read through the book enough, it is easily distinguishable how these are not essays but more of a free-written self-help tips. They are practical but for someone looking to read something that has more character or elaborate writing, this book can throw you off.

“Most negative emotional reactions are you identifying a disassociated aspect of yourself.”

I enjoyed a huge chunk of this book especially since it is such a feel good compilation. There are points that surely got stuck in my head and I really appreciated that.

101 Ways To Change The Way You Think is good book. It’s simplicity and forwardness makes me think of it as something you’d still like to reread but it’s also something that can easily be placed aside for a better book. It lost me partway yet I embarked on it with a positive outlook in mind. So despite all the downs of the book, I still appreciated it very much.

“The things you love about others are the things you love about yourself. The things you hate about others are the things you cannot see in yourself.”
