The Lies of Locke Lamora Review

An orphan’s life is harsh—and often short—in the mysterious island city of Camorr. But young Locke Lamora dodges death and slavery, becoming a thief under the tutelage of a gifted con artist. As leader of the band of light-fingered brothers known as the Gentleman Bastards, Locke is soon infamous, fooling even the underworld’s most feared ruler. But in the shadows lurks someone still more ambitious and deadly. Faced with a bloody coup that threatens to destroy everyone and everything that holds meaning in his mercenary life, Locke vows to beat the enemy at his own brutal game—or die trying.

Review

Nothing I will say can truly lay-out how good this novel is; it was a truly marvelous experience and a joy to devour!

I strongly appreciate the background of each character — the author choreographed the story impressively. Also, the friendship they have is just heart-warming. The way each of them compliment one another, the moments when they first met, everything about the characters will surely pull you into the story.

The world in which the story took place was simple and easy to understand. It revolves around a place but the world is given glimpses to detail that the entirety of the setting is vast and compact.

Writing-style wise, the novel is well-paced and the transitioning between the present and the future gives it depth. The past gives life to the backstory of the characters and enables the readers to have more empathy with the character’s choice of action in the span of the story.

Overall, I adore this book. No part of the story was scrapped, everything is tastefully written and profoundly woven that the cadence of its music is truly magnificent to the ear.

About the Author

I was born in St. Paul, Minnesota on April 2, 1978, the first of three brothers. I’ve lived in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area my entire life; currently, just across the border in Wisconsin, about half an hour east of the Twin Cities.

The Lies of Locke Lamora, my first novel, was bought by Simon Spanton at Orion Books in August, 2004. Prior to that I had just about every job you usually see in this sort of author bio– dishwasher, busboy, waiter, web designer, office manager, prep cook, and freelance writer. I trained in basic firefighting at Anoka Technical College in 2005, and became a volunteer firefighter in June of that year.

In 2007 The Lies of Locke Lamora was a World Fantasy Award finalist.

In 2008 I received the Sydney J. Bounds Best Newcomer Award from the British Fantasy Society.

In 2010, I lost a marriage but gained a cat, a charming ball of ego and fuzz known as Muse (Musicus Maximus Butthead Rex I).

My partner, the lovely and critically acclaimed SF/F writer Elizabeth Bear, lives in Massachusetts
